Search engines weigh a site's relevance by how many other sites link back to it. The idea is to link to places that already generate large amounts of traffic as well as have high search rankings. This tells engines that your site is highly relevant because other relevant sites link to it.
Linking with a competitor is not always a bad idea. You need to find a keyword that separates you from your competition and use it on their site. For example, we are a web design firm with many different competitors, yet we link with them every day. Are we crazy? No, we simply use our unique keywords to separate us from our competition. An example would be that we are a Chicago based Web Design Firm. Not all designers are from Chicago . Also we are experts in Usability. We can use these words on competitors' sites to help boost our unique keywords. This way, everybody wins. Now if someone needs usability help and they find themselves on our competitions site, they will see a link to us. |
